camera_curiosa5In de nieuwe serie ‘Camera Curiosa’ richt NPO Doc de lens op de meest intrigerende objecten uit de collectie van Teylers Museum en koppelt deze aan documentaires over hedendaagse thema’s.

Documentaire: ‘Higgs – Naar het hart van de verbeelding’

Zo normaals als elektriciteit tegenwoordig is, zo bijzonder was het in de Verlichting. Martinus van Marum, Teylers’ eerste museumdirecteur, was zo gefascineerd door dit fenomeen, dat hij in 1784 een gigantische elektriseermachine liet bouwen. Onder het motto ‘hoe groter de machine, hoe groter de kans dat ik de kleinste details kan ontrafelen’, deed hij jarenlang onderzoek naar statische elektriciteit. Om de wetenschappelijke opwinding van Van Marum te kunnen begrijpen, kun je kijken naar Higgs – naar het hart van de verbeelding (Hannie van den Bergh & Jan van den Berg, Human, 2012). Deze documentaire volgt de zoektocht naar het ‘God Particle’ in CERN, Zwitserland.

Screening at Cern

We finally were able to present our film at CERN. After the Amsterdam IDFA première in November ‘09 and the broadcasting on Dutch television in February last, this was another exciting highlight of our HIGGS story: showing the documentary at the very place where we shot most of its footage.
At 7 pm, more than 100 Cern scientists showed up, in the Main Auditorium, to watch our artistic impression of the quest for the Higgs boson and of the curiosity, passion and imagination in fundamental science. It turned out to be quite an extraordinary experience to show the film for an audience of sheer insiders but everybody seemed to like it a lot.

And there he was: the one and only Higgs. Professor Peter W. Higgs, the titular hero of our recently premiered documentary film, aka the namesake of the H-mechanism, H-field and H-boson – aka the magic triangle in particle physics – aka the special guest at the last IDFA-screening of our H-film.
